THE FOX AND THE GRAPES

A Fox one day spied a beautiful bunch of ripe grapes hanging from a vine trained along the branches of a tree. 

The grapes seemed ready to burst with juice, and the Fox's mouth watered as he gazed longingly at them.

The bunch hung from a high branch, and the Fox had to jump for it. 

The first time he jumped he missed it by a long way. 

So he walked off a short distance and took a running leap at it, only to fall short once more. 

Again and again he tried, but in vain.

Now he sat down and looked at the grapes in disgust.

"What a fool I am," he said. 

"Here I am wearing myself out to get a bunch of sour grapes that are not worth gaping for."

And off he walked very, very scornfully.

There are many who pretend to despise and belittle that which is beyond their reach.

여우와 포도 

어느 날 여우가 나뭇가지를 따라 가꿔진 포도나무에 매달린 잘 익은 아름다운 포도송이를 주의깊게 조사했다. 

그 포도는 즙이 가득하여 터질 준비가 된 것처럼 보였고, 포도를 갈망하여 바라보면서 여우의 입에는 침이 고였다. 

그 포도송이는 높은 가지에 매달려 있었고, 여우는 따기 위해 점프를 해야 했다. 

첫 번째 점프했을 때 여우는 거리가 멀어서 놓쳤다. 
그래서 좀 떨어진 곳으로 걸어가서 뛰면서 점프했지만, 다시 한번 포도에 미치지 못했다. 

몇 번이고 시도했지만 허사였다. 

이제 여우는 앉아서 포도를 넌더리 나서 쳐다보았다. 

“내가 얼마나 바보인지”, 모르겠네.

“갈망할 가치도 없는 신 포도 한 송이를 얻자고 스스로를 지치게 하고 있구나.” 

그러더니 그는 경멸하며 걸어갔다. 

교훈: 자신들의 손이 닿지 않는 것을 경멸하고 무시하는 척 하는 사람들이 많다.

시간의 접속사 when이 생략된 형태로 원래는 When he jumped the first time, he missed it by a long way이다.
