THE LION AND THE MOUSE

 

★ 잠자는 사자를 건드린 생쥐

A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws. A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion's nose. Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.

 

사자 한 마리가 숲 속에서 누워서  거대한 머리를 발 위에 받쳐 놓고 자고 있었다.

작고 소심한 생쥐 한 마리가 예기치 않게 그에게 다가왔고 놀라서 서둘러 도망치려고 사자의 코를 가로질러 달렸다.  

낮잠에서 깬 사자는 화가 나서 생쥐를 죽이기 위해 작은 생명체 위에 거대한 발을 놓았다.

 

① A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws.

     → 주어 lion + 동사 lay(lie의 과거)

      → 분사구문의 주어 his great head + 분사 resting

 

② A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly,

    and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion's nose.

    → 주어 (a timid little) Mouse + 동사 came upon + and + 동사 ran

    → 'in her fright and haste to get away'는 전치사구로 Mouse가 놀라서 서둘러 도망치려고 하는 상황을 설명하고 있다. 

 

③ Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her

   → 주어 Lion + 동사 laid on 

     → 분사구문의 (생략된 주어 Lion) + 분사 roused

★ 살려 달라고 애원하는 생쥐

"Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse. "Please let me go and some day I will surely repay you."

 

“살려주세요!” 불쌍한 생쥐는 애원했다. “저를 가게 해주시면 언젠가 꼭 은혜를 갚을게요.”

 

① "Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse. 

     → 직접 화법 "Spare me!" + 동사 begged + 주어 Mouse

 

② "Please let me go and some day I will surely repay you."

     → 명령문 let + and + 주어 I + (조동사 will) + 동사 repay

★ 나는 관대하니까 

The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him. But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.

 

사자는 행여 생쥐가 자신을 도울 수나 있을까 생각하니 아주 재미있었다. 그러나 그는 관대했고 결국 생쥐를 풀어줬다.  

 

① The Lion was much amused to think / that a Mouse could ever help him.

     → 주어 Lion + 동사 was amused to / that 이하 종속절의 주어 Mouse +(조동사 could) + 동사 help

 

② But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.

     → 주어 he + 동사 was + and + 동사 let

★ 그물에 걸린 사자

Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter's net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring. The Mouse knew the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net. Running to one of the great ropes that bound him, she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was free.

 

며칠 후, 숲에서 먹이에 몰래 접근하다가 사자는 사냥꾼이 놓은 그물 덫에 걸렸다. 스스로 나올 수 없어서 그는 숲 전체에 들리게 화를 내며 으르렁거렸다. 생쥐는 그 목소리를 알았고 재빨리 사자가 그물에서 버둥거리고 있는 것을 발견했다. 그를 묶고 있는 큰 로프 하나에 달려가서 생쥐는 끊어질 때까지 갉았고 사자는 곧 자유로워졌다.

      → 분사구문 + 주어 she + 동사 gnawed + and + 주어 Lion + 동사 was

      → 분사구문의 (생략된 주어 she) + 분사 running

★ 생쥐도 사자를 도울 수 있다

"You laughed when I said I would repay you," said the Mouse. "Now you see that even a Mouse can help a Lion."

 

“내가 은혜를 갚겠다고 했을 때 웃었죠.” 생쥐가 말했다. “이제 생쥐라도 사자를 도울 수 있다는 것을 보셨네요.”

 

① "You laughed / when I said I would repay you," 

      → 직접 화법 주어 You + 동사 laughed + 시간 부사절(when 이하) + 주어 I + 동사 said

 

②  "Now you see / that even a Mouse can help a Lion."

       →직접 화법 주어 you + 동사 see / that 이하 종속절의 주어 Mouse + (조동사 can) + 동사 help
