THE WOLF AND THE KID

 

★ 난 다 자랐어!

There was once a little Kid whose growing horns made him think he was a grown-up Billy Goat and able to take care of himself. So one evening when the flock started home from the pasture and his mother called, the Kid paid no heed and kept right on nibbling the tender grass. A little later when he lifted his head, the flock was gone.

 

언젠가 어린 양이 있었는데, 뿔이 자라서 자신이 다 자란 숫염소라고 여기며 자기 앞가림은 스스로 잘 할 수 있을 거라고 생각했다. 그래서 어느 날 저녁 양떼들이 초원에서 집으로 출발해 그의 엄마가 불렀을 때 어린 양은 주의를 기울이지 않았고 계속해서 좀더 부드러운 풀을 조금씩 먹었다. 잠시 후에 그가 고개를 들었을 때 양떼는 가고 없었다.

 

Billy Goat는 ‘숫염소’라는 뜻, take care of oneself는 ‘ ~을 돌보다, ~에 대한 책임이 있다’라는 뜻, flock은 ‘무리, 떼’라는 뜻, pasture는 ‘초원, 목초지’라는 뜻, pay heed는 ‘주의를 기울이다’라는 뜻, nibble은 ‘조금씩 먹다, 야금야금 먹다’라는 뜻, right는 부사로 ‘완전히, 줄곧’이라는 뜻이다.

    →There is 구문:  a little Kid라는 어린 양이 있었다.

    →그 어린 양은 이러이러한 성격의 양이었다.

    → 주절의 주어 the Kid + 동사 paid + and + 동사 kept

 

 

 

★ 으악, 늑대다!

He was all alone. The sun was sinking. Long shadows came creeping over the ground. A chilly little wind came creeping with them making scary noises in the grass. The Kid shivered as he thought of the terrible Wolf. Then he started wildly over the field, bleating for his mother. But not half-way, near a clump of trees, there was the Wolf!

 

그는 혼자였다. 해는 지고 있었다. 긴 그림자가 땅 위로 기어오기 시작했다. 차가운 바람이 약하게 그림자와 함께 다가오면서 풀밭에서 무서운 소리를 내고 있었다. 어린 양은 무서운 늑대를 생각하면서 몸을 떨었다. 그 후에 그는 들판 위를 거칠게 뛰기 시작하면서 엄마를 찾아 울었다. 하지만 절반도 못 가서 수풀 근처에 한 마리 늑대가 있었다!

 

sink는 아래로 서서히 내려가는 것을 말하는 동사로, ‘해나 달이 지평선이나 수평선 가까이 가다, 지다’라는 뜻이다. creep은 ‘기다, 기어가다, 서서히 다가오다’라는 뜻, chilly는 ‘차가운, 싸늘한’이라는 뜻, scary는 ‘무서운’이라는 뜻, shiver는 ‘추위나 두려움, 흥분 등으로 가볍게 몸을 떨다’라는 뜻, bleat는 ‘양이나 염소가 매애 하고 울다’라는 뜻, half-way는 ‘중도에, 중간에’라는 뜻, clump는 ‘수풀, 나무숲’이라는 뜻이다.

 

① A chilly little wind came creeping (with them) making scary noises in the grass.

     → 주어 wind + 동사 came

 

② The Kid shivered as he thought of the terrible Wolf.

     → 주어 The Kid + 동사 shivered

     → 때(~하면서)를 나타내는 접속사 as + 주어 he + 동사 thought

 

 

 

★ 제발 노래 한 곡 불러 주세요

The Kid knew there was little hope for him.

 

"Please, Mr. Wolf," he said trembling, "I know you are going to eat me. But first please pipe me a tune, for I want to dance and be merry as long as I can."

The Wolf liked the idea of a little music before eating, so he struck up a merry tune and the Kid leaped and frisked gaily.

 

어린 양은 자신에게 희망이 거의 없다는 것을 알았다.

 

“늑대 씨, 부탁이 있어요.” 그가 떨면서 말했다. “당신이 절 먹을 거라는 걸 알아요. 하지만 우선 제게 피리 한 곡 불러 주셨으면 좋겠어요. 춤 추며 가능한 한 즐거워지고 싶거든요.”

늑대는 먹기 전에 음악을 좀 연주한다는 생각이 마음에 들어서 즐거운 곡을 연주하기 시작했고 어린 양은 명랑하게 깡충깡충 뛰었다.

 

pipe는 ‘피리를 불다, (곡을) 피리로 불다’라는 뜻, tune은 ‘곡, 곡조, 선율’이라는 뜻이다. strike up은 ‘연주하기 시작하다’라는 뜻, leap은 ‘뛰다, 뛰어오르다’라는 뜻, frisk는 ‘깡충깡충 뛰다’라는 뜻, gaily는 ‘명랑하게, 즐겁게’라는 뜻이다.

 

① The Kid knew there was little hope for him.

     → 주어 the Kid + 동사 knew  + (that) + there was + 주어 hope 

 

② But first please pipe me a tune, for I want to dance and be merry as long as I can.

     → 명령문: 동사 pipe

     →이유(왜냐하면)의 접속사 for + 주어 I + 동사 want to

 

 

 

★ 양치기 개 등장!

Meanwhile, the flock was moving slowly homeward. In the still evening air the Wolf's piping carried far. The Shepherd Dogs pricked up their ears. They recognized the song the Wolf sings before a feast, and in a moment they were racing back to the pasture. The Wolf's song ended suddenly, and as he ran, with the Dogs at his heels, he called himself a fool for turning piper to please a Kid, when he should have stuck to his butcher's trade.

 

한편, 양떼는 천천히 집으로 향하고 있었다. 고요한 저녁 공기 속으로 늑대의 피리 소리가 멀리 들렸다. 양치기 개들은 귀를 쫑긋 세웠다. 그들은 늑대가 맛있는 음식을 먹기 전에 부르는 곡임을 알아차렸고 바로 뒤돌아 목초지를 달려가고 있었다. 늑대의 노래는 갑자기 끝났고, 개들이 그의 발뒤끔치를 쫓았다. 늑대는 달리면서 도살업자의 일에 충실해야 할 때 어린 양을 즐겁게 하기 위해 피리를 불다니 자기 자신을 바보라고 불렀다.

 

carry는 ‘(소리가 멀리서도) 들리다’라는 뜻, prick up one's ears는 ‘귀를 쫑긋 세우다, 귀담아 듣다’라는 뜻, feast는 ‘축제, 잔치, 맛있는 음식, 성찬’이라는 뜻, in a moment는 ‘곧, 바로’, heel은 ‘발뒤꿈치’라는 뜻, butcher는 ‘정육점 주인, 도살업자’라는 뜻, trade는 '거래'라는 뜻 와에 '손을 사용하고, 특별한 훈련과 기술이 필요한 종류의 직업, 일'이라는 뜻이다. 

 

① They recognized the song the Wolf sings before a feast, and in a moment they were racing back to the pasture.

     → A and B의 문장이다.

     → 주어 They + 동사 recognized + 목적어 the song [(that) the Wolf sings before a feast]

     → and +  주어 they + 과거진행 were racing

 

② The Wolf's song ended suddenly, and as he ran, with the Dogs at his heels, he called himself a fool for turning piper to please a Kid, when he should have stuck to his butcher's trade.

    → A and B의 문장이다.

 

 

 

교훈: Do not let anything turn you from your purpose.

 (어떤 것도 당신의 목적에서 벗어나게 하지 마십시오.)

 

 

교훈이 뜻밖이라는 느낌이 들었다. 전문을 읽기 전에는 어린 양이 깨닫게 된 교훈이 나올 줄 알았다. '호랑이에게 잡혀가도 정신만 차리면 된다'는 식으로 다 자란 어른 양처럼 으기양양하던 어린 양이 죽을 뻔한 경험을 통해서 성숙해진다는 내용이 나올 줄 알았는데, 놀랍게도 늑대가 깨달은 점이 교훈이다. 시작 부분에서는 어린 양의 시점으로 진행되다가 끝날 때와 교훈에서는 늑대의 시점으로 진행된다는 점이 특이했다.
