워렌 버핏 & 피터 린치_영어 명언

 

"The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient."

(주식 시장은 인내심 없는 사람들의 돈을 인내심 있는 사람들에게 이동시키는 도구다.)

device는 ‘장치, 기구’라는 뜻, transfer는 일반적으로 ‘이동하다, 이동시키다’라는 뜻으로, transfer something to A라고 하면 ‘A에게 재산, 권리 등을 양도하다, 이전하다’라는 뜻이다. 왜 transfer를 쓰나 했더니, 이런 의미가 있다. 
the + 형용사는 복사 보통명사로, the impatient는 ‘인내심 없는 사람들’, the patient는 ‘인내심 있는 사람들’이라는 뜻이 된다. 

 

The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.

→ 주어 The stock market + 동사 is

→ A(The stock market) is B(device ~) 

→ from A to B: A에서 B로

 

 

 

 

“Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing.”

(리스크는 당신이 지금 무엇을 하고 있는지 모르는 것에서 생긴다.) 

 

risk를 위험이라고 하면 danger와 구분이 안 되는 점이 아쉽다. come from은 ‘~에서 왔다, ~ 출신이다, ~에서 나오다, 생기다’라는 뜻.

 

Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing.

→ 주어 Risk + 동사 comes from

→ 전치사 from + 동명사 not knowing

→ knowing의 목적어 what you're doing

 

 

 

 

“We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.”

(우리는 그저 다른 사람들이 욕심을 부릴 때 걱정하고 다른 사람들이 걱정할 때만 욕심을 부리려고 한다.)

 

simply는 ‘그냥, 그저’라는 뜻, attempt는 ‘시도하다, 해보다’라는 뜻, fearful은 ‘두려워하는, 걱정하는’이라는 뜻, greedy는 ‘탐욕스러운, 욕심 많은’이라는 뜻이다.

→ 주어 We + 동사 attempt

→ to부정사 + and + to부정사

→ to be fearful when others are greedy  ↔ to be greedy only when others are fearful

 

 

 

 

“Investing without research is like playing stud poker and never looking at the cards.”

(리서치를 하지 않고 투자하는 것은 포커를 하면서 카드를 전혀 안 보는 것과 같다.)

 

invest는 ‘투자하다’라는 뜻, stud poker는 ‘스터드 포커(첫 한 장은 엎어 주고 나머지 4장은 한 장씩 젖혀서 나누어 주며 돈을 거는 것)’라는 뜻이다.  

 

Investing without research is like playing stud poker and never looking at the cards.

→ A is like B: 주어 Investing without research + 동사 is

→ 전치사 like(~와 같은, ~와 다름없는) + 동명사 playing ~ and looking

→ playing stud poker and never looking at the cards

 

 

 

 

“Behind every stock is a company. Find out what it's doing.”

(모든 주식 뒤에는 회사가 있다. 그 회사가 무슨 일을 하는지 알아내라.)

 

이 문장을 보면 '모니터 뒤에 사람 있다'는 말과 같은 느낌이 든다. 물론 피터 린치가 한 말이 먼저이겠지만. 

거의 같은 의미에서 한 말이 있을 정도로, 주식 투자를 할 때 중요하게 생각하는 문장 중 하나인 것 같다.

 

“There's a company behind every stock and a reason companies - and their stocks - perform the way they do."라는 문장은 '모든 주식 뒤에는 회사가 있고, 그 회사와 그 회사의 주식이 그렇게 작동하는(그런 실적이나 주가 흐름을 보이는) 이유가 있다'라는 뜻이 된다.

→ 주어(전치사구) Behind every stock + 동사 is 

→ 도치구문이라고 봐도 될 듯. A compay is behind every stock. 이렇게 하면 중점이 바뀌면서 뉘앙스가 좀 달라져서 원 문장만큼 강하게 와닿지는 않는다.

→ 명령문: 동사 find out

 

 

 

 

“If you're prepared to invest in a company, then you ought to be able to explain why in simple language that a fifth grader could understand, and quickly enough so the fifth grader won't get bored.”

(당신이 기업에 투자할 준비가 되어 있다면, 5학년생이 이해할 수 있는 단순한 언어로 그것도 5학년생이 지루해하지 않을 정도로 충분히 빠르게 설명할 수 있어야 한다.)

 

ought to는 ‘~해야 한다’라는 뜻, fifth grader는 ‘5학년생’이라는 뜻, bored는 ‘지루해하는’이라는 뜻이다.

워렌 버핏의 말을 찾다가 발견한 문장인데 뼈를 때린다(워렌 버핏이 한 말인지 아닌지는 구글 검색을 해봐도 확실하지 않다).

현재 당신이 받고 있는 월급은 그들이 당신이 당신의 꿈을 잊어버리고 자신들이 준 일만 하도록 주는 뇌물이라는 의미다.
