이상한 나라의 앨리스 #16_4장 ③ 앨리스 집주인을 막다(?)

★토끼, 집으로 오다

And so she went on, taking first one side and then the other, and making quite a conversation of it altogether; but after a few minutes she heard a voice outside, and stopped to listen.

그래서 그녀는 한쪽을 택했다가 그 다음에는 다른 쪽을 택하면서 계속해서 늙지 않는 것에 대해 대화를 꽤 했다. 하지만 몇 분 후에 그녀는 밖에서 목소리를 들었고 그 소리를 들으려고 혼잣말을 멈췄다.

 

go on은 ‘계속하다’라는 뜻, take one side는 ‘한쪽을 택하다’라는 뜻, take sides는 ‘편을 들다’라는 뜻, make a conversation은 ‘말을 나누다, 대화하다’라는 뜻이다.

 

이 문단 바로 앞에서는 더 이상 나이를 먹지 않으면 늙지 않으니 좋은데 나이를 먹지 않으면 수업을 받아야 하는 거 아니냐는 말이 나왔는데 앨리스는 더 이상 늙지 않는 것의 장단점을 계속 따지고 있었던 것.

이 상황에서 토끼가 등장한다.

 

★처음에는 두려워서 떨다가

'Mary Ann! Mary Ann!' said the voice. 'Fetch me my gloves this moment!' Then came a little pattering of feet on the stairs. Alice knew it was the Rabbit coming to look for her, and she trembled till she shook the house, quite forgetting that she was now about a thousand times as large as the Rabbit, and had no reason to be afraid of it.

“메리 앤! 매리 앤!” 목소리가 말했다. “당장 내 장갑 가져와!” 그런 다음에 계단에서 발이 작게 타닥타닥하는 소리가 들렸다. 앨리스는 그녀를 찾으러 토끼가 오는 소리임을 알았고, 자신이 집을 흔들 때까지 떨었다. 자신이 지금은 토끼보다 1000배 정도 더 커서 토끼를 두려워할 이유가 전혀 없다는 것을 완전히 까먹은 채로.

 

patter는 ‘타닥타닥 하는 소리를 내다’라는 뜻, tremble은 ‘몸을 떨다, 몸이 떨리다’라는 뜻, shake는 여기서 타동사로 ‘~을 흔들다, ~을 뒤흔들다’라는 뜻이다.

 

▶ 문장 분석

Alice knew it was the Rabbit coming to look for her, and she trembled till she shook the house, quite forgetting that she was now about a thousand times as large as the Rabbit, and had no reason to be afraid of it.

→ 주어 Alice + 동사 knew (+that절) + and + 주어 she + 동사 trembled

→ 주절 + 분사구문 quite forgetting ~

→ 분사구문 안의 that절의 주어 she + was + and + had

 

 

 

★문으로 들어오려는 토끼를 저지하다

Presently the Rabbit came up to the door, and tried to open it; but, as the door opened inwards, and Alice's elbow was pressed hard against it, that attempt proved a failure. Alice heard it say to itself 'Then I'll go round and get in at the window.'

곧 토끼는 문으로 와서 열려고 했다. 하지만 문이 안쪽으로 문이 열리는데 앨리스의 팔꿈치가 문을 세게 누르고 있어서 그 시도는 실패로 돌아갔다. 앨리스는 토끼가 “그렇다면 돌아서 창문으로 들어가야지”라고 혼잣말 하는 것을 들었다.  

 

presently는 ‘곧, 이내’라는 뜻, come up to는 ‘~오다, 다가가다’라는 뜻, inwards는 ‘안쪽으로’라는 뜻, attempt는 ‘시도’라는 뜻, prove a failure는 ‘실패로 돌아가다’라는 뜻이다.

 

 

★어림도 없지. 너 못 들어와.

'THAT you won't' thought Alice, and, after waiting till she fancied she heard the Rabbit just under the window, she suddenly spread out her hand, and made a snatch in the air. She did not get hold of anything, but she heard a little shriek and a fall, and a crash of broken glass, from which she concluded that it was just possible it had fallen into a cucumber-frame, or something of the sort.

“그것도 못할 걸.” 앨리스는 이렇게 생각했고 토끼가 창 바로 아래에 오는 것을 들었다고 생각할 때까지 기다렸다가 갑자기 손을 뻗어서 허공에서 잡아챘다. 그녀는 어떤 것도 잡지 못했지만 작은 비명 소리와 함께 굴러 떨어지며 창문이 깨지는 소리를 들었고, 그 소리로 인해 오이 틀이나 그 비슷한 것 안으로 토끼가 떨어졌을 것 같다고 결론내렸다.

 

fancy는 ‘상상하다, 생각하다’라는 뜻, make a snatch는 ‘낚아채다, 잡아채다’라는 뜻, shriek은 ‘흥분, 공포, 고통으로 날카롭게 지르는 비명’이라는 뜻이다.  

 

평소에 오이만 봤지 오이가 어떻게 자라는지 보지 않아서 매번 까먹는데 오이는 덩굴식물이라서, 지지대가 있어야 위로 자랄 수 있다. cucumber-frame으로 찾으면 여러 모양의 틀이 나온다. 틀을 타고 올라가면서 자라도록 삼각형 모양의 틀을 세워두거나 벽에 걸쳐서 세워두는데 여기서는 이걸 말하는 것 같다.

 

▶ 문장 분석
